Morocco 4 day desert tour

Day 1:Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Desert (470 km / approx. 8-9 hours)

Start your 4-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour with pick up from your hotel in Fes. The first today destination to be discovered is Ifrane, a city which is famous for its clean streets, European-style houses, and alpine air, which gives it the nick name of “Switzerland of Morocco.” Next, we take a scenic drive through the cedar forest of Azrou and have an opportunity to watch and even interact with the cheeky Barbary apes. Later we Cross the Middle Atlas to reach  Midelt known as the capital of apples. We follow the stunning Ziz Valley, home to palm groves and fortified Kasbahs.

Late in the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, on the edge of the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Ride your camel to the desert and experience a magical sunset before making yourself comfortable in a luxury Berber camp. Dine on a sumptuous Bedouin feast and listen to live desert music while dining under the stars. Overnight in the camp.

Day 2:Merzouga – Desert Exploration – Nomad Visit – Khamlia Village – Merzouga Hotel Stay

The sweeping desert is enough for anyone to cut that morning snooze and wake up to see the sunrise over the dunes an experience not to be missed. After breakfast at the camp you will take a full day 4×4 desert safari. Head to the nomad families, to see how people live in the desert. Continue to the village of Khamlia, where much of the traditional music played is the lively Gnawa – music brought to the country by descendants of slaves from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Take in a performance and consider enjoying the local speciality, Berber pizza, for lunch. You will also visit the fossil mines in M’fis. Wrap up the day with a tranquil stroll through a desert oasis. Then head back to Merzouga for a relaxing evening in a hotel or riad with dinner and a place to sleep. Overnight in Merzouga.

Day 3:Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Midelt – Middle Atlas (470 km / approx. 8-9 hours)

After breakfast, take one last look at the dunes before heading north again. The first stop is the historic town of Rissani, was once before the capital of the Tafilalt region. Stroll around its lively traditional market, the souk is generally open round-year but only live Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Later we leave for Erfoud, famous for date production and fossils.

From there, the road curls back through the Ziz Valley and up into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Take breaks for panoramic vistas and a leisurely lunch. It’s late afternoon or early evening when we reach the town of Midelt or a mountain village close by for a peaceful night’s rest in a comfortable hotel or guesthouse setting. Dinner is included.

Leonardo Gabrielle
An Unforgettable Desert Experience with Desert Excursion Morocco

We took the 4 day tour from Fez to Merzouga with Desert Excursion Morocco and it was an amazing experience. Given that we were picked up, everything went perfectly and good organized. Our driver, Hassan, was knowledgeable, kind, and always ensured that we were comfortable. The high point for sure was the camel trek out to the dunes and stargazing at the luxury desert camp—it was a once in a lifetime experience. We also enjoyed the visit to the nomad families and listening to Gnawa music in Khamlia. Every stop was genuine and meaningful. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone looking for a real Moroccan desert experience.

Professional, Authentic, and Absolutely Breathtaking

10/10 would recommend to anyone We had the most amazing stay, everything surpassed what i expected. As a photographer, I’m constantly on the hunt for beautiful landscapes and unique culture, and I found both through this 4-day tour. They are very professional, talented, helpful and accommodating right from the beginning. I particularly loved the tempo of the tour – nothing was rushed and there was lots of time to explore Ziz Valley and Todra Gorges. The camp at desert was very well arranged…delicious food and warm-welcome. I can never forget seeing the sunrise over the dunes. This is the most amazing way to experience the Sahara and southern Morocco – I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Very Important Things to Know Before You Go
4 days desert tour from Fes to Merzouga

Pack for Different Climates

Morocco offers diverse weather across regions. Expect hot days in the desert, cool nights in the mountains, and moderate temps along the coast. Bring layers, a scarf or hat for sun protection, and a warm jacket for cooler evenings.

Cash is King in Rural Areas

While cities accept cards, many villages, desert stops, and local shops don’t. Bring enough Moroccan dirhams, especially for snacks, souvenirs, and tips along the way.

Be Respectful of Local Culture

Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. Women may prefer wearing scarves in more conservative towns.

Desert Essentials

For the camel ride and desert stay, wear comfortable pants (not shorts), closed shoes or sandals, and bring a small backpack with water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a flashlight.

Internet May Be Limited

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and riads, but don’t expect strong connections everywhere especially in the desert. Download maps and entertainment in advance.

Local SIM or Roaming Plan

If you need reliable communication or internet on the go, consider buying a local SIM card or ensuring your mobile plan covers Morocco.

Expect Some Long Drives

Morocco is a large country and this tour covers a lot. Enjoy the scenery, bring snacks, and consider a travel pillow for comfort on the road.

Tipping is Appreciated

Tipping your driver/guide, hotel staff, and local guides is a common and appreciated gesture in Morocco. Keep small bills for this purpose.

Be Open to Adventure

Part of what makes Morocco magical is its unpredictability. Be flexible, open-minded, and ready to experience real moments whether it’s dancing under desert stars or sipping mint tea with a nomadic family.

Stay Hydrated and Mind What You Eat

Traveling through different climates and regions especially the desert can dehydrate you quickly. Always carry a bottle of water (your driver can help you find clean bottled water on the way). When it comes to food, Moroccan cuisine is delicious, but it may be spiced differently than you’re used to. To avoid stomach upsets, ease into unfamiliar dishes, avoid raw foods in small roadside places, and consider bringing basic medication like probiotics or anti-nausea tablets just in case.
