Marrakech to Fes desert tour 2 days

Day 1:Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley – Merzouga Desert (Approx. 9–10 hours of driving with stops)

We start from your hotel in Marrakech in the early morning. As we travel, we make our way over the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, passing through mountain pass roads at up to 2,260 metres at the peak of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. We’ll take time to stop at panoramic viewpoints and visit the mythical Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site/ famous movie location. Following lunch by Ait Ben Haddou, we drive past Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Africa,” and through Valley of Roses.

As we near the desert, everything has changed significantly. We reach Merzouga by the late afternoon and your camel will be waiting. You’ll have a ride in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes, see a stunning desert sunset and arrive to your luxury or standard desert camp. End your day with a delicious dinner around campfire and listen to the sounds of Berber music and gaze upon the twinkling stars, then retire to your tent.

Day 2:Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes (Approx. 8 hours of driving)

Wake up early to see the sunrise over the dunes is absolutely magical. We will ride the camel (or 4×4 if you’ve had enough camel!) back to the village of Merzouga after a breakfast at the camp, and then start our journey north on a beautiful route towards Fes.

We’ll drive through the Ziz Valley, famous for its date-palm groves and steep gorges, and through the towns of Errachidia and Midelt, where we’ll stop for lunch. The journey passes through the Middle Atlas mountains with the stunning scenery of cedar forests and with any luck, chances to spot wild Barbary macaques near Azrou.

We stop near the end of the journey by Ifrane, Morocco’s “Little Switzerland” – a delightful place distinguished by its alpine appearance and pristine streets. Early evening, we reach Fes, your driver will take you your Riaad or hotel, end of your Morocco Desert Tour!

Unforgettable Desert Adventure in Just Two Days!

I recently did the 2 days Marrakech to Fes desert trip through Desert Excursion Morocco and it was far beyond what I expected. From our sinuous drive through the Atlas Mountains to our magical camel ride in Merzouga nothing disappointed us. Mohammed was a great guide who was informative, friendly and looked after us really well during the tour. An overnight in a desert camp under the stars was a one-of-a-kind experience. The drive was super long but so worth it for the scenery and cultural stops. Highly recommend for those short of time but big on dreams!

Efficient and Authentic Morocco Experience

This 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes was one of my best travel decisions I’ve ever made. The itinerary was spot on — long drives, sure, but filled with incredible views and interesting stops. Sunset camel ride and a night in the Sahara was so surreal. The campfire music, the food and the starlit sky were unforgettable. Mohamed our guide and driver from Desert Excursion Morocco was both personable and knowledgeable. This tour offers the opportunity to truly sample the beauty and culture of Morocco. A truly efficient adventure! Thanks Desert Excursion Morocco for this memorable trip.

Very Important Things to Know Before You Go
Helpful information about Morocco!

Pack for Different Climates

Morocco offers diverse weather across regions. Expect hot days in the desert, cool nights in the mountains, and moderate temps along the coast. Bring layers, a scarf or hat for sun protection, and a warm jacket for cooler evenings.

Cash is King in Rural Areas

While cities accept cards, many villages, desert stops, and local shops don’t. Bring enough Moroccan dirhams, especially for snacks, souvenirs, and tips along the way.

Be Respectful of Local Culture

Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. Women may prefer wearing scarves in more conservative towns.

Desert Essentials

For the camel ride and desert stay, wear comfortable pants (not shorts), closed shoes or sandals, and bring a small backpack with water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a flashlight.

Internet May Be Limited

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and riads, but don’t expect strong connections everywhere especially in the desert. Download maps and entertainment in advance.

Local SIM or Roaming Plan

If you need reliable communication or internet on the go, consider buying a local SIM card or ensuring your mobile plan covers Morocco.

Expect Some Long Drives

Morocco is a large country and this tour covers a lot. Enjoy the scenery, bring snacks, and consider a travel pillow for comfort on the road.

Tipping is Appreciated

Tipping your driver/guide, hotel staff, and local guides is a common and appreciated gesture in Morocco. Keep small bills for this purpose.

Be Open to Adventure

Part of what makes Morocco magical is its unpredictability. Be flexible, open-minded, and ready to experience real moments whether it’s dancing under desert stars or sipping mint tea with a nomadic family.

Stay Hydrated and Mind What You Eat

Traveling through different climates and regions especially the desert can dehydrate you quickly. Always carry a bottle of water (your driver can help you find clean bottled water on the way). When it comes to food, Moroccan cuisine is delicious, but it may be spiced differently than you’re used to. To avoid stomach upsets, ease into unfamiliar dishes, avoid raw foods in small roadside places, and consider bringing basic medication like probiotics or anti-nausea tablets just in case.
