3 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. It’s an ideal tour to take you feel the pure beauty of Morocco’s Nature, from the snow-covered height of High Atlas to the cosmic dunes of Sahara sands. You’ll also check out centuries-old kasbahs, Berber settlements, towering gorges and verdant palm-filled valleys along the way. The trippy centerpiece of the trip is a camel trek deep into the Erg Chebbi, where you’ll see the sun sink behind the dunes, sleep in a magical traditional desert camp and be wowed by the stars above. Meticulously crafted for intrepid travelers looking to experience both adventure and culture, this adventure visits the spirit-filled heartlands of southern Morocco to provide an unforgettable insight into the magic of the desert.
We will start our day trip very early in the morning leaving Marrakech heading through the High Atlas Mountains, on the way we will cross the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass an elevation of 2,260 metres above sea level. We will stop for wide views at various points along the way and small Berber villages perched on the hills.
Our first main stop is the fortified kasbah village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its spectacular mud-brick structures and film credentials. Following a guided tour and lunch at a nearby restaurant, we’ll proceed to Ouarzazate, ‘the Hollywood of Africa,’ where we can take a tour of the Atlas Film Studios or visit the highly rated Kasbah Taourirt.
Late in the afternoon, we continue to the Valley of Roses and Kalaat M’Gouna. Once in Dades Valley. You will stay at a delightful guesthouse with canyon views, receive a homecooked Moroccan dinner, and sleep amidst the serene calm of the valley.
Following breakfast with a view, we head out to the dramatic Todra Gorges, a series of limestone canyons that climbers and photographers love. There’s time to take a walk between the high cliffs, sip coffee and breathe in the mountain-fresh air. From there, we plunge deeper into the desert, passing by Erfoud (which is famous for its fossil workshops and as a launching point to the Sahara). In the afternoon we will arrive at the edge of the dunes in Merzouga, where we will meet your camel caravan.
Start an unforgettable camel trek through the dunes until you reach the bivouac of ERG CHEBBI, guided by an experienced camel man. We arrive at a simple, yet comfortable, traditional Berber village located in between the dunes at sunset, casting the sands in golden and orange tones. Eat a traditional meal under the stars, and listen to local music and drumming around the fire. This mystical evening in the middle of the Sahara will be one of the highlights of your trip to Morocco!
Rise early and witness the serene sunrise as it emerges over the dunes–a tranquil and memorable sight. Have breakfast at the camp and mount your camels or have a 4×4 transfer back to the beginning point of the pickup and meet your driver, drive back to Marrakech. On the way back you will be passing through Alnif, Nkob and the lovely draa valley (known by its palme groves and traditional villages). In the late evening, we reach Marrakech and your guide will drop you off in your hotel or riad – end of your 3 days desert tour from Marrakech.

I’ve just completed the 3 day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour and it was an amazing experience throughout! Hassan from the Desert Excursion Morocco Tour company was wonderful, professional and informed about every stop along the way. The best bit was marathon 2 camel trekking through the golden dunes at sunset. The desert camp at night, under the stars, was magical. Everything was perfectly planned out—from transportation to comfort to food to sceneries. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is travelling to Morocco for some real Sahara experience!
This 3 days trip from Marrakech to Merzouga desert exceeded all our expectations. From the drive through the Atlas mountains to riding camels through the dunes, everything was well-planned by Desert Excursion Morocco. Our driver-guide Mohamed was friendly and had a lot of interesting things to say about Berber culture. The desert camp was cozy, and the music around the fire was a nice touch.” The morning the sun rose over the dunes was once-in-a-lifetime. If you desire a blend of adventure, culture and magnificent scenery – this tour is perfect for you!
Morocco offers diverse weather across regions. Expect hot days in the desert, cool nights in the mountains, and moderate temps along the coast. Bring layers, a scarf or hat for sun protection, and a warm jacket for cooler evenings.
While cities accept cards, many villages, desert stops, and local shops don’t. Bring enough Moroccan dirhams, especially for snacks, souvenirs, and tips along the way.
Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. Women may prefer wearing scarves in more conservative towns.
For the camel ride and desert stay, wear comfortable pants (not shorts), closed shoes or sandals, and bring a small backpack with water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a flashlight.
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and riads, but don’t expect strong connections everywhere especially in the desert. Download maps and entertainment in advance.
If you need reliable communication or internet on the go, consider buying a local SIM card or ensuring your mobile plan covers Morocco.
Morocco is a large country and this tour covers a lot. Enjoy the scenery, bring snacks, and consider a travel pillow for comfort on the road.
Tipping your driver/guide, hotel staff, and local guides is a common and appreciated gesture in Morocco. Keep small bills for this purpose.
Part of what makes Morocco magical is its unpredictability. Be flexible, open-minded, and ready to experience real moments whether it’s dancing under desert stars or sipping mint tea with a nomadic family.
Traveling through different climates and regions especially the desert can dehydrate you quickly. Always carry a bottle of water (your driver can help you find clean bottled water on the way). When it comes to food, Moroccan cuisine is delicious, but it may be spiced differently than you’re used to. To avoid stomach upsets, ease into unfamiliar dishes, avoid raw foods in small roadside places, and consider bringing basic medication like probiotics or anti-nausea tablets just in case.
