Marrakech to Fes Sahara tour 5 days

Day 1:Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

We start early from Marrakech, where we’ll pick you up from your accommodation after breakfast. We drive through the beautiful High Atlas Mountains traversing the stunning Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m). We’ll stop en route for pictures and a visit to an argan oil cooperative. By midday, we arrive at the iconic UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, with time to wander the ancient maze-like streets and mud-brick dwellings that have been the backdrop to Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After lunch, we head to Ouarzazate (Africa’s Hollywood) & cross the valley of the roses before we reach the dades valley where you will spend the night in a hotel with dinner.

Day 2:Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Merzouga (Sahara Desert)

We wake up with a breakfast with super nice views of the valleys and we then head on direction the amazing Todra Gorges. You’ll also have an opportunity to stretch your legs en route, with a stroll through the high canyon walls that surround you (ideal for photos and a breath of fresh air!). We drive through Erfoud and reach Merzouga, located at the front side of the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes. Your camel safari starts in the evening.  Watch the sunset over the golden sands riding camel to your comfortable desert camp. Experience a typical Berber dinner, music by the fire, and sleep in a private tent.

Day 3:Merzouga Desert Exploration by 4x4

Mezmerize yourself as you rise early to be in awe of the desert’s morning. Following breakfast, we will journey in a 4×4 to the area surrounding Merzouga. To begin, we go to Khamlia, a small village famous for the playing of Gnawa music by descendants of African slaves. Then, we continue on an off-road adventure to meet a nomadic family in the desert and enjoy a cup of tea with them as we hear about their day-to-day life. You’ll visit the M’fis mines, and a small desert oasis before heading back to Merzouga for a late afternoon in a hotel next to the sand dunes to relax and rest while getting ready for the next day’ adventure.

Day 4:Merzouga to Midelt via Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas

We move out of the Sahara after breakfast and head north as we ride towards the cooler climate of the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road leads us via the fertile, green palm groves of the Ziz valley, finding frequent photo opportunities along the way. We’ll pause for lunch in the town of Midelt, which lies between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. Overnight stay in a Charming Hotel or Riad in Midelt.

Day 5:Midelt to Fes via Azrou and Ifrane

We leave breakfast behind and drive on through the beautiful mountainscapes. En route, we’ll stop in Azrou, a town with cedar forests and monkey colonies, next to Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its alpine-style architecture and tidy streets. We reach Fes in the afternoon; here our driver will escort you to your riad or hotel, concluding your unforgettable 5 days tour from Marrakech to Fes with Desert Excursion Morocco.

What kind of accommodations will we stay in?

You will be housed in hand-picked accommodations that exemplify the beauty and culture of Morocco. You will stay at adorable riads in the medina in places like Marrakech and Fes. In the desert, your accommodations are at a comfortable traditional Berber-style camp under the stars. Choices will vary from economy to Limo we’ll accommodate your taste and wallet.

Is the camel ride in the desert difficult or uncomfortable?

The camel ride set out here is one of the main stops for many tourists and is an unforgettable way to see the dunes as the sun sets. The ride is paced gently, so although it can be a little bumpy, it’s generally quite manageable. If you have back or walking problems please inform us in advance and we may organise a 4×4 transfer to the camp*!

What should I pack for this tour?

Some good barmy day/cool night gear comes in handy – particularly in the desert! Suggested items to bring include a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, jacket (it can get a bit windy), good walking shoes, and a small back pack. An even thicker-layered garment is good for a desert night. How long is the drive each day?

Daily driving time varies. Some days there can be 3–4 hours of picturesque driving, and the longer drives (such as Merzouga to Fes) can be 7–8 hours with stops. We stop often to take photos and stretch your legs, as well as for food or other necessities. The most popular tour package that contains 9 to 10 hours drivers each day is the 2 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga desert and round back to Marrakech or the 2 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga desert and Fes

Breakfast is served daily in all accommodations, and dinners are included in more remote places such as the Dades Valley and in the desert. Unforgettable Desert Experience with True Local Insight

We had an unbelievable 5-day trip from Marrakech to Fes with Desert Excursion Morocco. From the twisty roads of the High Atlas and the fantasy camel ride into the dunes of Merzouga, all was perfectly organized. Our guide, Mohamed, was super knowledgeable and really made us feel like family. The overnight stay at the desert camp under the stars was something I won’t soon forget, especially alongside the Berber music and warm hospitality. This trip allowed us to get a close look at Moroccan culture in a way no big tour company ever could. Highly recommended!

An Immersive Cultural Tour Beyond Expectations

This tour exceeded all expectations. Five days was a lot, but it didn’t feel too crunched. For me the best experience was to visit the Berber traditional village and found out how they live. We met our guide driver from Desert Excursion Morocco and he was very warm person and he was charismatic, flexible and make the time smooth. The landscape changed day to day from red mountains to palm-filled valleys to the golden Sahara. Sleeping in the desert had long been a dream. If you’re looking for a true Moroccan experience, with the real people -book this tour and you won’t regret.

Very Important Things to Know Before You Go
Helpful information about Morocco!

Pack for Different Climates

Morocco offers diverse weather across regions. Expect hot days in the desert, cool nights in the mountains, and moderate temps along the coast. Bring layers, a scarf or hat for sun protection, and a warm jacket for cooler evenings.

Cash is King in Rural Areas

While cities accept cards, many villages, desert stops, and local shops don’t. Bring enough Moroccan dirhams, especially for snacks, souvenirs, and tips along the way.

Be Respectful of Local Culture

Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and when visiting religious sites. Women may prefer wearing scarves in more conservative towns.

Desert Essentials

For the camel ride and desert stay, wear comfortable pants (not shorts), closed shoes or sandals, and bring a small backpack with water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a flashlight.

Internet May Be Limited

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and riads, but don’t expect strong connections everywhere especially in the desert. Download maps and entertainment in advance.

Local SIM or Roaming Plan

If you need reliable communication or internet on the go, consider buying a local SIM card or ensuring your mobile plan covers Morocco.

Expect Some Long Drives

Morocco is a large country and this tour covers a lot. Enjoy the scenery, bring snacks, and consider a travel pillow for comfort on the road.

Tipping is Appreciated

Tipping your driver/guide, hotel staff, and local guides is a common and appreciated gesture in Morocco. Keep small bills for this purpose.

Be Open to Adventure

Part of what makes Morocco magical is its unpredictability. Be flexible, open-minded, and ready to experience real moments whether it’s dancing under desert stars or sipping mint tea with a nomadic family.

Stay Hydrated and Mind What You Eat

Traveling through different climates and regions especially the desert can dehydrate you quickly. Always carry a bottle of water (your driver can help you find clean bottled water on the way). When it comes to food, Moroccan cuisine is delicious, but it may be spiced differently than you’re used to. To avoid stomach upsets, ease into unfamiliar dishes, avoid raw foods in small roadside places, and consider bringing basic medication like probiotics or anti-nausea tablets just in case.
